Downtown Design Guidelines Development Underway
What would make downtown a more pleasant place in which to work, live, shop, and play? The Metropolitan Planning Commission and the City of Knoxville have asked the public this question at a series of workshops guided by a steering committee which formed after several recent plans and recommendations suggested downtown should be more pedestrian-friendly.
The goal of the Guidelines is to restore developer confidence and stimulate new investment and allow flexibility, while fostering high quality design. The Guidelines have been drafted in respect to the existing downtown qualities, community desires and the need for reasonable provisions for both public and private improvements.
The guidelines are formatted into four sections: 1) General Principles relating to the Public Realm, the Private Realm and Historic Resources; 2) Specific Recommendations regarding Districts; 3) Administration Models; and 4) Additional Proposals.
The initial draft of the downtown guidelines can be found in full at http://archive.knoxmpc.org/downtown/draft_july14.pdf (http://broadcast.usacatalyst.com/lt/t_go.php?i=29&e=OTE1&l=http://archive.knoxmpc.org/downtown/draft_july14.pdf). After Gay Street is finished, can we move on from the historical block building guideline? Maybe something a little newer looking? Just a thought.

'Got anything in particular in mind?
These guidlines need to go further than broadway. As I see it the Corner Lounge is still a part of downtown. Though C-3 zoning doesnt allow us to be. Very disconcerning that we, as a buisness cannot have a patio because of this. Broadway to the south in a section is as I understand it zoned C-2. All of those buisnesses are allowed to do alot with there places. Just dont understand....
