The Pullet Surprise
06-18-2007, 10:31 PM
My itinerary (actual) from Bonnaroo 07:
Friday:
Uncle Earl
Richard Thompson Band
Kings of Leon
The Roots
Manu Chao Radio Bemba Sound System
Bang Bang Bang
Saturday:
Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals
The Police
Scott Amendola Band (SA, Jenny Scheinman, Nels Cline, John Shifflett)
The Dynamites feat. Charles Wigg Walker
Sunday:
Charlie Louvin
The Decemberists
The White Stripes
Summary notes:
Performance of the weekend goes to The Dynamites, hands down. Seriously. I'm biased since a good friend of mine manages the band, of course, but this show was tremendous. And still, it wasn't even the full ensemble. They didn't even start until 1:40 a.m. (delayed by a boogered-up woofer) and just blew the roof off of the tent.
I wish that I could even have hope that the Scott Amendola Band would play anywhere near Nashville again with Cline in the lineup, but alas, it is probably not to be. I had to miss Wilco to get a decent bead on the White Stripes set. The festival arrangements for which bands to put on whatever stage is quite a task - but for evening acts like White Stripes or Flaming Lips, it is next to impossible to get a decent view unless you're really early.
I don't know who the jackasses were that were trying to topple the Bobbleheads, but for chrissakes, people - stop trying to wreck stuff.
The Richard Thompson band, in full electric glory, was a real treat. I want to see RT in a guitar battle with Nels Cline.
Passed on opportunities to see discussions with Jim Jarmusch and Bill Plympton. The lines to get into the cinema tents were intolerable.
Kings of Leon are an act you have to see live in order to appreciate.
Charlie Louvin is a man I'd love to sit down with and pick his brain. He's got a keen mind and a tremendous sense of humor.
Decemberists have their moments. Suffice it to say, few of them are in the 90+ degree heat at the Which Stage. I would rather see them in a smaller venue. They would communicate better.
The Police. Eh. What can you say. The performances were well rehearsed, but there wasn't any deviation from the "Reunion Tour" boilerplate. No surprises; all hits. Yawn. A number of the songs were downshifted at least a couple of thirds, if not an octave, and some were slowed waaaaaaaay down. Double yawn. This thing appears to be The Sting Show, brought to you by Best Buy. That's a shame, really. They'd been scheduled to play for 2 hr 30 but clocked in at just under 1:40.
I'm still coughing up grey goop from inhaling several gallons of fine TN pastureland in the form of dust. The drought has done the festival grounds no favors.

In a lot of ways this was favorite B'roo. Maybe I am just getting better at figuring out how to do it.
Highlights:
Lou Donaldson & Dr. Lonnie Smith
James Blood Ulmer
Richard Thompson
Flaming Lips (esp. the intro)
Ravi Coltrane w/ Jeff Tain Watts
Also great sets from: Angel and the Lovemongers, Dixie Dirt, Gypsy Hands, and Christabel. I tried to catch all the Knoxville acts I could but it was tough.
I saw a few bands for a song or two that sounded fabulous but wasn't always sure who it was. Fountains of Wayne was one- and another was this wacky slavic thing.
I hated to miss Sunday but I had obligations in K-town. Would have to have seen Ornette and Louvin. (Did they play together?
Police sounded good- but as you said, no real suprises. Some songs held up really well (Wrapped Around Your Finger, Every Little Thing) but some didn't for me: DOO DOO DAA, Walking on the Moon. Andy Summer's solos were hit or miss. Steward Copeland was really fun to watch. You have to give Sting his props- he's taken care of himself and managed to belt it out pretty well. I was pleased he didn't take his pants off.
Of course one of the real pleasures is all the cool folks you get to meet or reconnect with. Lots of great conversations waiting to be had. The night temps were perfect and made things all the better.
The dust was pretty intense at times, but I prefer it to mud.

My highlights:
Mavis Staples- I swear, after that set, I sort of sheepishly told my wife that I had a big lump in my throat and had to wipe tears out of my eyes several times during her set. "Me too!" she exclaimed. I talked to Chuck Watt later and he said the same thing. Her delivery was so emotional and intense. You could see that she was giving it everything she had. Just awesome. I'm getting chills just thinking about it.
Ziggy Marley- I love live reggae.
DJ Shadow- up until that rapper came onstage and started going "Are you ready to rock?" the crowd would yell. And he'd say "Allright, I'm gonna ask you one more time.... Are you ready to ROCK?" crowd would yell. and he'd say "One more time... Are YOU READY TO ROCKKKKK?!" ad infinitum
finally I said "that's one too many times..." and left
Sam Roberts Band- I don't know anything about these guys but they put on a hell of a good set of guitar rock songs. Passionately played.
Richard Thompson- holy crap what a player. He alternately inspires me and makes me want to give up the guitar altogether.
Ravi Coltrane- The jazz club is a great addition to Bonnaroo. It was really well put together but needs a bathroom somewhere near it.
The Tenderhooks- catch these guys while you can. I think they have what it takes to be a big success in music. Energetic, bright and talented.
as always great to see Smokin Dave
Christabel & the Jons- I like these fine musicians a lot. Too bad the sound at the Blue Room Cafe was not so good that day. It was a weird venue for Christabel. They need to play in a small dark room.
I was completely underwhelmed by the Police. I actually nodded off during their set. No surprises at all. Stewart Copeland is fun to watch, but I never realized how all over the place he is tempo-wise. He just suddenly speeds songs up.
Best Bonnaroo/Bikaroo moments: Beatle Bob dancing right in front of me during our entire set, the stretch of road after we turned off of highway 30 on the Cumberland Plateau- gorgeous, shady and cool, seeing a non-pot smoking friend try it and pass out on the flight cases backstage at DJ Shadow, the Big Bopper burger in Pikeville TN, every time a helicopter would fly over someone in our party would yell STING!, but it mutated into STANG!
Worst Bonnaroo/Bikaroo moments: staying up so late on Friday night that I couldn't stay awake for the Flaming Lips and Sasha & Digweed on Saturday, Jim's dog bite just outside of Dayton TN, heat and dust
JB
I think this was my Best Bonnaroo Ever. Some of the highlights for me.....
Rodrigo y Gabriella - I was REALLY looking forward to them, and they didn't let me down. And their version of Stairway to Heaven kicks ass.
Richard Thompson - I think he just gets better every time I see him. I love that he played a couple songs from Shoot Out The Lights. And when he plays '52 Vincent, it gives me chills
Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punk - what else can I say?! Added bonus for me...I love the movie Everything is Illuminated...lead singer sounded just like Alex from the movie. Our very own Gypsy told me later that lead singer is indeed the actor from the movie. Totally premium band.
Manu Chau - as good as I expected them to be, and then some.
Mavis Staples - best Sunday morning church service. ever.
Decemberists - Colin in seersucker playing some of my favorites. PLUS Mavis Staples. Yeah.
Tool - oh, yeah.
Police - I had a blast at this show. Yeah, I know, Sting forgot some lyrics, whatever. It was fun! I was a dancin' fool.
I know there were a bunch of others that we saw and really liked, but my brain is tired now.
Oh, one more thing....getting to hear Dazed and Confused twice this weekend. I think maybe John Paul Jones should do 'roo every year.

I didn't go, obviously, but I am still reeling from the Sasha and Digweed booking. Snore. I can think of 10 DJs/Producers/Acts I'd rather see:
DJ Mehdi (disclaimer: he's the husband of one of my wife's collaborators)
DJ Rekha
Vicious Vic
Audion
Booka Shade (no brainer)
Kode 9
Transglobal Underground
Levan
Luomo
So Percussion
And the Gold Standard if it must be trance (ie accessible): Paul. Van. Dyk.

My 2nd Bonnaroo and better than the first.
My highlights:
The Flaming Lips - holy mother of god, this was one of my all time favorite shows. The entrance, the exit, Mountainside!!!!, the lasers, guitars back in Lips songs, the crowd, the vibe, and ending with Moonlight Mile. Truly legendary
Michael Franti & Spearhead - better than Kings of Leon which I left early. Great crowd, great message and the Sesame Street jam medley to boot!
Superjam - The Dazed and Confused into Zep medley was bad ass. This entire show rocked. I agree, bring JPJ to every Roo.
The Police - nothing fancy, but had a blast once we moved up to find decent sound.
Clutch - bringing the rock to Roo! Did not disappoint
Black Angels - closing with Now I Wanna Be Your Dog sealed the deal for me. This is a great band.
White Stripes - I will never look at Jack White the same way again. That guy kicks mucho ass.
Other highlights: Fountains of Wayne, Ween, The Hold Steady, Ziggy, Roots, Tool, Smokin' Dave, Wolfmother
I hate to admit it, it must have been a combination of a number of factors but Sasha and Digweed were entertaining for the time I was present. Made it to bed at 4:30-ish that night. Heard them finish @ 5:30.
Biggest disappointment: HiTop making a trip to Roo that ranks up there with SilentK's Penis trip a few years back. The campsite was consensus was unanimous: Lame. :)
Aw. Did HiTop get the ol' saline IV treatment or something?
My highlights:
Flaming Lips - I like this band, still don't love them as much as Jeffx and Randall and various others do, but you cannot deny the grace, majesty and power of their live show. Well, I suppose you can (and I talked to a few people who thought they were "boring." Haters.), but you shouldn't. You do have to check your cynicism at the door, not an easy thing for me to do, and yeah, Wayne's a bit long-winded with the political rants, but my god, you will be entertained. It was outstanding.
Tool - biggest surprise for me. Not a big fan of them, either, but they fucking bring it live. Absolutely colossal sounding, and tight as a tick. Unquestionably the best band of its kind in the world.
The Whigs - went to this on the recommendation of Don C. and others, having not previously heard them. If you haven't heard of them, you will very soon. A great, fun, straight ahead pop/rock band from Athens.
Tenderhooks - They got up, stood, and delivered. A terrific set, the best I've ever heard them play, and I've seen some damned good ones. This is the best band in Knoxville right now, period.
Major disappointment: The Police. Maybe I was a little overpsyched for this, but... Todd's take on it is dead on the money. Too slow, too Stingified. Lacked energy and exuberance. "Truth Hits Everybody" was literally painful to listen to, seeing as how it was about half of its original speed, and maybe 20% of the glorious coked-up early 80's live speed. A very safe, conservative set list, and they only played 2/3rds of their allotted time. Would it have killed them to dig through the catalog a bit and bust out "Canary In A Coal Mine" or "Deathwish" or "Demolition Man"?
I would have liked to have seen more local shows, and more stuff in general, but the heat and hiking around certainly take a toll on me. By Sunday, I was virtually immobile. Oddly, didn't encounter any Blabbers or Knoxville folk in general other than Randall and RRR (twice!) and the Angel & the Lovemongers crew.

Not quite. Wasn't on site even 24 hours. He just didn't see a lot to get the Bonnaroo experience.

This was my 5th Bonnaroo, and like Apeville said, it gets better each time as you learn how to do it better. I think I've mastered it now. :)
My favorites -
Ween - maybe the 2nd best Ween show I've ever seen. They played 2 new songs which I liked a lot. They rocked it. And I got their autographs. (swoon)
Black Angels - I saw them at the Pilot Light not too long ago and thought they were pretty cool, but now I have a much better appreciation for them. They played an awesome set at Bonnaroo.
Galactic - They had dudes from Jurassic 5 and Blackalicious up there with them (and made a new album with them too) and it turned into a kick-as hip-hop/funk show. Very surprising and one of the most entertaining and impressive shows of the weekend... to me, anyway.
Dixie Dirt (Blue Room Cafe) - I love Dixie Dirt. They blew the roof off that tent. They nailed it. Truly.
Wilco - can't go wrong with Wilco
Tortoise - I had never heard of them, they were cool.
The National - recommended to me by a friend, and rightly so.
Govt Mule - I've seen them so many times and didn't really even want to check them out, but I'm glad I did. I only stayed for about 6 songs, but I managed to catch Jorma Kaukonen playing a few songs with them and it sounded great. Warren Haynes really is a badass... I'm glad I didn't miss it.
Lips - they were great, but I wish Wayne would've stopped talking so much. After midnight if you're not making the crowd stand up and dance you'll lose their interest... which is what happened to me. But the intro was fantastic!!! And they sounded great too.
Like everyone else, I was a little disappointed in The Police. It was boring. 'Nuff said.

Favorites-Mavis Staples,FOW,Richard Thompson,Nels Cline/Scott Amendola. The Wilco and the Lips show had some moments.
Disappointments-Police.Not terrible but they seemed tired and brought no energy esp. for the main stage.
Picking up and reviving Ornette after he collapsed.Scary, but he's strong. The man was soaking wet.
Biggest Surprise-Tool.Not really my kind of band but that show along with the lights/Video was a full on multimedia experience.
Also Ravi Coltrane and Sam Roberts.

Forgot Tool in my list. They were definitely a plus. Rosetta Stoned was pure joy. Every time Maynard addressed the crowd I cracked up.
Maynard: "I smell patchooooouuuullliii"
"So, I just took a shower. It felt great. Air conditioned tour bus too"
"You're all under arrest"

I've seen Sasha and Digweed with and without each other 5 times and it is always entertaining. I'd like to see the set list.
Still: If you are going to drop serious cash on trance DJs why not go for the gusto and put Van Dyk on the bill?
And if anyone mentions that scozzer Paul Oakenfold, I will be in Knoxville on Thursday and I will kick some ass.
I am so jealous. It sounds divine.
I really, really thought I'd be able to do it this year, but at 7 months pregnant and 45 lbs over what I weighed at last year's Bonnaroo, I realized near the end of last week that I might keel over and die if I tried hiking around in the heat and sleeping in a tent (I only camp for Bonnaroo. I am not a camper). The dust sounds like it was pretty extreme this year, too, and that probably wouldn't have been good for baby or moi.
Sigh.
I am really glad everyone had such a great time :-)

i'd need to have my schedule on hand to remember everything i saw. i did a lot of sampling -- there were a bunch of people i was curious about and would watch for 3 or 4 songs before running to something else. and i still missed a ton of stuff.
the best single set i saw was manu chao. perfect match of performer, stage, audience, timeslot, everything.
other things i liked a lot: rodrigo y gabriela, james blood ulmer, girl talk (great dj set, i didn't hang around for sasha/digweed), gogol bordello, david murray (my one successful foray to the jazz tent), richard thompson, the hold steady (rocked hard, different live than i expected them to be), lily allen (had a good tight band, lotsa energy, funny and foul-mouthed and sassy, what's not to love?), tool (who among other things demonstrated that it is still possible to put on a giant rock show WITH LASERS and not be cheesy or ironic or anything but sheer thundering showmanship). and the superjam was fun.
the police, i enjoyed the police. they were fine, they sounded good. my only stumbling block was sting, whose natural smugness has congealed to unfortunate effect in the last 25 years. i never quite got past the sense that he felt like he was doing all of us (and stewart and andy) a favor. which maybe he was, but he could've somehow been a little more gracious and less above-it-all. still, those are some good songs. and one thing the set revealed was how much the police's tunes are about solid hooks and nifty sonic architecture and how little they are about sting's often awful lyrics (hey mighty brontosaurus). i had forgotten how many of their songs have parts that go "oh wo eee oh wo" or whatever -- and also how those are often the best parts of the songs.
the bits i heard of gillian, white stripes, charlie louvin, dj shadow, the decemberists and tortoise all sounded good. (poor tortoise, middle of the afternoon is a tricky time for post-rock.) and ornette was really good for the truncated part of his set that he finished. i also had more fun at widespread panic than i will admit (although let me say pre-emptively that any photos or other evidence that surfaces of me dancing to widespread panic are clearly forgeries). both last year and this year i spent the whole weekend saying there was no way i was going to the big closing-night hippie jam show, and then both times i ended up going and having fun. i guess i'll stop saying that.
the one set i'm sorriest i missed was scott amendola/nels cline. by the time i got to the tent the line looked prohibitively long.

That's a great line about Sting ;-)
And the most fun I had last year was dancing my ass off ALL NIGHT (can't remember the last time I stayed up all night dancing) at the masquerade party. The band was in costume, but at the end of the evening they were revealed to be...A HIPPIE JAM BAND!!!! I swore my dance partner to secrecy that I had enjoyed myself so much, and then dragged him off to the silent disco to finish out the wee morning hours redeeming my dignity by shaking it to Prince and The Jackson 5.

Well, it WAS a really good WSP set after all. They were nailing each song... it's almost as if they've been playing together for 20 years! :)
So don't be embarrassed... even if you hate WSP, that was a really good set, so it'd be hard not to appreciate it in my opinion. They played two songs that they've never played before - a Black Sabbath tune and a John Lennon tune, can't go wrong with that! I'm glad you had fun. There are a bunch of Panic haters on the blab it seems... But they do what they do really, really well.

whew. i'm just now getting back to the land of the living. i got sick as a dog monday; fever, cold sweats, coughing, sneezing, etc. between the hard partying and the 3 pounds of dust and crud i inhaled, it's amazing i made it out at all. my asthma-prone gf is still in rough shape. note to self: bandanaroo '08.
i made the mistake of spreading myself a little too thin trying to catch as much as possible this year, and therefore catching less. still, my cup was filled to the brim, if not runneth over.
incredible sets: aesop rock, dj shadow, tool, hold steady, whigs, tenderhooks (blue music), manu chao, roots (who played "roxanne" better than the police did the following evening), lips. probably a few more i'm forgetting. i would count ween, but i didn't catch enough of their set to make it official.
sets that sounded incredible from a distance but that i couldn't attend for some reason or another: sam roberts band, mute math, decemberists, sasha and digweed, clutch.
really, the only "meh" set i saw was the annuals, and that was just because i wasn't much into them. they played and sounded fine, as far as i could tell.
oh, and yeah, the police were underwhelming. they didn't even play their full time allotment, did they? still, there were some really nice moments. "wrapped around your finger" sounded great, i thought.
weirdest situation: trying to follow a guided meditation session (resulting in a near-comatose audience) with a semi-acoustic pop set while clutch is cranking a full-on rock assault in the not-very-distant background. and even though the circumstances weren't ideal, i still feel like we pulled off a good show. sometimes it's those uphill battles that prove most rewarding.
we just plain had an amazing time. i can't thank ac enough for giving us the opportunity, and everyone who works it for making it what it is. i was impressed before with the scope of the thing, but having now seen sort of "behind the scenes" i'm in awe.
as soon my lungs are cleared out, i'll be geared up for next year.

Someone should do an epidemiological study. My wife and I both contracted some variant of some bug. But considering the reduced number of hours of sleep and the exposure to the airborne pastureland flotsam and being around 80,000+ possible vectors of human disease . . .

Another great year and no complaints from here. One question however. Previously, I had never noticed any major lines to get into Centeroo. Maybe 10-15 minutes at the worst....early and at peak times. This year I think I spent close to 30 minutes waiting on two occasions. At it's worst, I got irritated and left after realizing it was going to be an hour longer and I was going to miss James Blood Ulmer (which I did). We checked both entrances to see if one was better than the other and they were both horrible. Didn't know if something had changed, more searches, less lines, etc. Heard quite a few people talking about it.
Hi Top
06-20-2007, 05:21 PM
Hmmmm. I told Rob he needed to bring one of those "child leashes" for me. Showed up at about 10:30AM Sat.; beer immediately followed. Hung out in Tent Land several hours. Several, and I mean several beers, Two 5 hour energy shots and a cranberry and vodka later we stumbled in to catch Fountains Of Wayne. I think it was alright, not really sure. Can't really remember what we did after that but I think it involved going back to camp. I think there was another vodka cranberry and several beers involved and another 5 hour energy. At some point it got dark and we went to catch The Police. We were watching from what must've been Farragut and I decided I needed a cigar and stated I would return. Must've forgotten I said I would return. I grabbed a beer and hit the terlit and stumbled over to where the Lips were going to play. Wayne was on stage messing with some stuff. I was what would approximately be 3 rows back. Not sure how much time passed but it seemed like an eternity. Went to hit the head again and came back to wait for The Lips. This time I was center stage about 40-50 yds back. Stood there for another eternity. Finally, they did "War Pigs" and I stood there for another eternity. I did enjoy hearing the Police from there. Couldn't see them from where I was before anyway. Wish my brain would've been functioning, would've been nice to hang with folks I knew. Since I did not, it was somewhat boring. However, when the Lips hit the stage I got goosebumps and couldn't wipe the smile off my face. The freaking landing of The Mothership was unbelievable! Laser pointers! Cconfetti! Fo!, Balloons! Happy, Happy! Joy! Joy! Made it til shortly after "Mountain Side" (that was the highlight for me)and decided that I could either A: Go pee and get some water or B: Pee all over the people around me and pass out in it. I went with "A" and I'm sure the folks around me appreciated that. When I turned around to leave I didn't realize 60,000 freaking people had filled in behind me and I damn near had a panic attack. It took approx 10-15 minutes to wade to the back of the crowd at which point I took a deep breath and began to feel like I would live another day. Hit the head again, got a water and watched Wayne go on a rant about Bush and the war. Nice I guess, I agreed with him, but I wanted to hear more Lips. Not sure how much longer I hung out, but I headed back to camp for more water and by the time I got back to camp I remember them playing "She Don't Use Jelly" and I'm not sure how much longer they played after that. I do remember that as soon as they stopped playing I hit the hammock and passed out. Overall, good time but next time I'll make sure I keep my cell phone with me so I can find mi amigos. I specifically didn't take it with me because I was afraid I would lose it. Shit, I didn't even want to take my wallet in, but that meant I would not be able to buy beer. Long live Wayne Coyne. I don't know how folks made it for 4 days. I was cashed after 1. Need the Media/V.I.P. hookup to make it all 4 days. I'm apparently a big puss now. Next year I will pace myself and try a different approach. Think I'll definitely rent an RV.
I can't believe you read all this. (If you did)
